HGV Time Pilot
A compliance-first driver hours tracking system built to simplify UK HGV regulations for everyday drivers.
HGV Time Pilot is a web application designed to help HGV drivers accurately track working time, rest periods, and driving limits in line with UK and EU tachograph rules. It was built to solve a practical problem: most compliance tools are either overly complex fleet systems or manual paper-based tracking that’s easy to get wrong.
The platform provides a simplified, mobile-friendly interface where drivers can log activities in real time and immediately see whether they are staying within legal limits.
Key features:
- Real-time driver hours tracking with compliance validation
- Rolling reference period calculations (including 17/26-week rules)
- Activity logging designed around tachograph categories
- Alerts for potential breaches before they occur
- Clean, mobile-first UI designed for use in cab environments
- Historical logbook for reviewing previous shifts
Technical overview:
Built as a full-stack web application with a focus on performance and data correctness. The system models driver activity streams and applies rule-based compliance logic to calculate working time, rest periods, and infringements.
Special attention was given to:
Deterministic rule evaluation (avoiding “AI-style ambiguity” in compliance logic)
Edge-case handling for split shifts, rest interruptions, and mixed activity days
Scalable data model to support long reference periods without performance degradation
The system also includes an AI-assisted support layer designed to answer regulatory questions using structured rule data (RAG-based architecture).
Status
The original version is live and actively used by drivers, with a full rebuild underway to modernise the architecture and expand compliance capabilities.
